EPRI, Energy Storage Canada Sign MOU to Accelerate Energy Storage Innovation Across North America

PALO ALTO, Calif. (Sept. 29, 2025) -- EPRI and Energy Storage Canada (ESC) have announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to create a practical platform for collaboration that delivers insights to support the growth of energy storage and the broader energy transition across Canada and North America. This collaboration aims to deliver objective, actionable insights that can enhance grid reliability, flexibility, and affordability.

Canadian system operators are actively enabling energy storage to meet evolving grid needs. Ontario alone has 2,800 MW of energy storage currently under construction, and the Independent Electricity System Operator recently led the two largest energy storage procurements in Canadian history.

As part of the MOU, signed at the 10th Annual Energy Storage Canada Conference, EPRI and ESC will focus on identifying and addressing key barriers that hinder the growth of energy storage, while allowing stakeholders in Canada to benefit from EPRI's global expertise in energy storage technologies.

"As Canada's electricity system evolves to meet growing demand and integrate more renewables, energy storage is critical to ensuring reliability and flexibility," said Durgesh Manjure, vice president of integrated grid and energy systems at EPRI. "This agreement with ESC enhances our ability to share insights and best practices, while connecting Canadian stakeholders to global research networks and developing locally relevant solutions tailored to Canada's unique energy landscape."

One key benefit of this new collaboration is increasing ESC's engagement with EPRI's Energy Storage Integration Council (ESIC), formed in 2013. ESIC advances the deployment and integration of energy storage systems through open, technical collaboration through working groups and strategic sessions and has published documents and online resources that are free to all.

“Energy storage is one of the fastest growing sectors in the energy industry and will be critical to Canada’s future grid,” said Leone King, vice president corporate services at ESC. “We’re excited to work with the team at EPRI to ensure Canada’s storage industry is able to contribute to the larger global body of research and learnings, as well as sharing the unique innovations happening across the country.”

This collaboration will also:

  • Share publicly available research and best practices on technical requirements, standards, codes, and regulations related to energy storage.

  • Identify opportunities and barriers across the production, distribution, and deployment of all energy storage technologies and durations.

  • Exchange information such as publicly available white papers, case studies, and reports on topics including:

  • Energy storage safety

  • Emerging technologies

  • Analysis, including but not limited to, EPRI's DER Value Estimation Tool (DER-VETTM)

  • Facilitate networking and communication through workshops, webinars, and meetings.
